Daily loss limit
Updated
How the daily loss limit works, when each day starts at 00:00 UTC, and what happens when you reach it.
On this page
Some challenges set a daily loss limit: the most your equity can fall in one day. It is a % of the account size, from 0.5% to 10%, and always smaller than the max loss. The challenge's Rules tab says whether it has one.
Where the day starts
Each day runs from 00:00 to 00:00 UTC. At 00:00 UTC, the day's start is set to the higher of your balance and your equity at that moment, and the limit counts from there.
So open profit at 00:00 raises the day's start. If that profit fades the next day, it counts toward the day's loss.
How the line is set
Today's line is the day's start minus the daily limit. The limit is a % of the account size, not of the day's start, so it is the same amount every day.
Example: a $25,000 account with a 4% daily limit can lose $1,000 in a day.
- You start the day with a balance of $25,400 and a trade open at +$600, so your equity is $26,000.
- The day's start is the higher of the two, $26,000.
- Today's line is $26,000 minus $1,000: $25,000.
The max loss still applies too. On any day, whichever line is higher is the one you would reach first.
Equity, live
Like max loss, the daily limit is judged on equity, on every price, so open losses count. Equity at the line reaches the limit, not only below it.
What happens when you reach it
The challenge sets one of two outcomes, and its Rules tab says which.
- The account ends. Every position closes at the live price and pending orders are cancelled. See What ends an account.
- Trading pauses until 00:00 UTC. Every position closes and pending orders are cancelled. You can't trade again until the next day starts at 00:00 UTC. Then you trade as normal, from a new day's start.
During a pause:
- A position on a market that is closed at that moment closes at its first price when the market reopens.
- The max loss still applies.
- Nothing can pass a step that day.
Staying clear of it
The account warns you when you get close to the day's limit and shows how much of it you have used. A good habit is to set your own stop for the day, well inside the limit, and to remember that open profit at 00:00 raises the day's start.
