Placing orders
Updated
Market, limit and stop orders in the terminal, trade sizes in lots, one position per market, closing trades, and why an order can be refused.
On this page
You trade in the terminal. Every order is a market, limit or stop order, and it fills at Runtiler's live prices. Your orders don't go to an exchange: they fill on your challenge account.
Order types
| Order | When it fills | The price you get |
|---|---|---|
| Market | At once | Buy at the ask, sell at the bid |
| Limit | When the price reaches yours | Your price or better |
| Stop | When the price touches yours | The market price at that moment |
- A buy limit goes at or under the ask, a sell limit at or over the bid. Use it to buy lower or sell higher than now.
- A buy stop goes over the ask, a sell stop under the bid. Use it to join a move once it starts.
- If you type a price on the other side of the market, the ticket turns your limit into a stop (or back) and tells you.
Limit and stop orders wait under Orders until they fill or you cancel them. They are also cancelled when a step passes, when you claim a reward, and when the account is paused for the day or ends.
Trade size
Sizes are in lots. The ticket can also size a trade in USD (what it is worth), Risk $ (what you lose if the stop loss is hit) or Risk % (that loss as a share of your balance). Sized by risk, the size follows your stop loss.
| Market | 1 lot is | Smallest size | Steps of |
|---|---|---|---|
| BTC/USD | 1 BTC | 0.0001 | 0.0001 |
| ETH/USD, BNB/USD | 1 coin | 0.001 | 0.001 |
| SOL/USD, LTC/USD, HYPE/USD | 1 coin | 0.01 | 0.01 |
| XRP/USD | 100 XRP | 0.01 | 0.01 |
| DOGE/USD | 1,000 DOGE | 0.01 | 0.01 |
| SUI/USD | 1 SUI | 1 | 0.1 |
| EUR/USD, GBP/USD | 100,000 EUR or GBP | 0.01 | 0.01 |
| XAU/USD (gold) | 100 oz | 0.01 | 0.01 |
| XAG/USD (silver) | 5,000 oz | 0.01 | 0.01 |
| WTI, BRENT | 100 barrels | 0.01 | 0.01 |
| SPX500, NAS100 | 1 × the index | 0.01 | 0.01 |
| Stocks | 1 share | 0.01 | 0.01 |
There is no largest size other than what your free margin covers. When a size is more than that, the ticket shows the most you can trade.
One position per market
Each account holds one position per market. A trade the same way adds to it, at the average price. A trade the other way reduces it, closes it or turns it around: long 1 lot of BTC, then sell 1.5, and you are short 0.5. So you can't hedge inside one account. Before you place a trade, the ticket says what it will do, such as "Closes your long."
Closing a position
- Open the position from its row or its line on the chart. On a desktop you choose how much to close. On a phone you get Close half and Close all.
- A part you close must be at least the market's smallest size, and so must what is left. If not, close all of it, or less.
- To close every position at once, use close all in the Positions tab. It asks first and shows the total profit or loss. A position whose market is closed stays open until the market reopens.
Why an order can be refused
When the terminal can't place an order, its button greys out and says why.
- Not enough margin. Your free margin has to cover what the trade adds. A limit or stop is checked again when it fills: if your margin is short then, it is cancelled and you get a notification. See leverage and margin.
- The market is closed, paused or has no price. You can still cancel a pending order there. See market hours.
- Trading is paused until tomorrow. On a challenge that pauses at the daily limit, trading resumes at 00:00 UTC. See daily loss limit.
- 100 orders are waiting. An account can have up to 100 limit and stop orders at once. Cancel one first.
- The size or a stop is off. The size is under the smallest or not on its steps, or a stop loss or take profit is on the wrong side. The ticket says what to fix.
One tap on a phone
Turn on One tap, beside your account, and Buy and Sell trade at once at the size shown under the spread, with no second tap. On a desktop, the Quick trade strip does the same. Both send a market order with no stop loss or take profit, so add those right after if you want them.
