Challenge rules
Profit targets and steps
Updated
How many steps a challenge has, how each profit target is counted from the full size, and exactly when a step passes.
On this page
A challenge has up to three steps, each with one profit target. Pass every step and the account is funded.
Steps
| Type | Steps | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Instant | None | Funded from day one |
| 1-Step | One profit target | Funded |
| 2-Step | Two profit targets | Funded |
| 3-Step | Three profit targets | Funded |
An instant challenge has no target to reach. See Instant funding.
How a target is counted
A target is a % of the account size, from 1% to 20% a step. It is counted on your balance: on a $25,000 account with an 8% target, you pass at a balance of $27,000.
Each step starts again at the full size, so every target counts from the size, not from where the last step ended. A $10K 2-step at 8% then 5% passes step 1 at $10,800 and step 2 at $10,500.
When a step passes
A step passes on a trade close that leaves nothing open, when all of these are true:
- your balance is at or above the target;
- you have the challenge's minimum trading days, if it has some;
- your best day fits its consistency rule to pass, if it has one.
Open profit never passes a step. If your open trades take you past the target, close them: the step passes on the close that leaves you flat, as long as the balance is still at or above the target.
If you still need trading days
If you reach the target before you have your trading days, the step waits. On a later day, open and close a trade. When that close leaves you flat, with the balance still at or above the target, on the day that completes your count, the step passes. A small trade is enough, unless the challenge counts only profitable days: then that day needs its profit too. See Trading days and profit days.
Paused days
If the daily limit pauses your account, nothing can pass for the rest of that day. Trading resumes at 00:00 UTC, and you can pass again from then.
What happens when you pass
- The next step starts at once, at the full size.
- Your trading days, best day and max loss floor start over from the full size.
- A time limit, if there is one, counts again from the moment you passed.
- Pending orders are cancelled, so place them again if you still want them.
After the last step you are funded. The account starts again at the full size, and you can claim rewards. See How a challenge works.
